Know how to identify possible hantavirus infection:

Press release from the Wyoming Department of Health:

The deer mouse, common in Wyoming and other parts of the U.S., is a primary culprit in the spread of hantavirus to humans.
Exposure to rodents - even breathing the air in places where they have been - can lead to a serious illness known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) - a condition that has proven fatal in 30 to 40% of all reported cases.

Certain everyday chores can increase your risk of exposure to hantavirus! Before you begin any cleaning project, make sure you know how to protect yourself from hantavirus. Visit our Hantavirus Protection page for a step-by-step guide to dealing with rodents and their leavings.

The most common way humans contract hantavirus is by inhaling infectious materials in the air. Symptoms can appear anywhere from 3 days to 6 weeks after exposure, followed by rapid disease progression. Contact your physician immediately if you believe you have been exposed and are experiencing any of the conditions described on our HPS Signs and Symptoms page.
